Adult Academic Program Students, Teachers, and Staff Settle into Their New Space at Sandburg Learning Center
It's been four months since the AAP has moved to Sandburg Learning Center, and students, teachers and staff are settling in nicely to their new space. While there have been a lot of changes, accommodations, and some compromises, everyone, overall, is feeling comfortable at Sandburg. For example, the level-four ELL students are enjoying new white boards in their classroom. "At Winnetka, we had a long wall covered with white boards; it was great, because I often have up to eight students writing on the whiteboard at one time," explained Barbara, the level-four ELL teacher. "When we moved to Sandburg, I lost all of my white boards! Fortunately, Theresa [the program director] saw the importance of all the white boards and made a case for me to get more in my classroom at Sandburg." Just a few weeks ago, Barbara's classroom received five extra white boards for students.
On the Family Literacy side of Sandburg, preschool students are enjoying their lockers---something they have never had before. "The lockers are for big kids," said Salman a four-year-old. "The lockers are awesome!"
In other classrooms, students are enjoying more space and natural lighting. Derek, a college-bound, basic skills student said, "My new classroom is nice and bright. The natural lighting is great!" Derek went on to say that, in his opinion, it's the teachers that make the classroom not the bricks, mortar and windows. "I love my teachers! They are great! It doesn't matter what building we are in, as long as our [AAP] teachers are there!"
As the school year comes to a close, those at Sandburg look forward to holding summer classes and the changes that next fall will bring.
