An exceptional reader who inspires his classmates, Lester Givens is one of Robbinsdale Area Schools’ remarkable students.

The Northport Elementary School fourth-grader has read more than 60 books since the school year started. While he enjoys learning about the world through National Geographic books, he also reads for fun, citing Pokemon and the Magic Tree House series as favorites.

“My teachers always had books on shelves, and I’d read them,” he says. “The biggest book I’ve read is ‘8,000 Facts That Kids Should Know.’ It was 506 pages long, and was really interesting.”

Mary Taris, Lester’s fourth-grade teacher, describes Lester as “inspirational.”

“He has a passion for knowledge and learning new things, and I think that’s catching with his fellow students,” she says. “His family goes to the library regularly, and he’s very disciplined – he’s been in karate since kindergarten.”
