Primary Years Programme at Lakeview

Primary Years Programme at Lakeview

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a school-wide program at Lakeview Elementary School in which all students in kindergarten through grade 5 participate.   Students are engaged in hands-on lessons which foster their natural curiosity.  The IBPYP takes an international approach to educating the whole child.  All students will have Spanish language and culture instruction.  Through rigorous and culturally diverse education, students learn to problem solve, appreciate different cultures and gain understanding of their place in this world.  IBPYP encompasses traditional elementary school subjects, but is organized around six transdisciplinary themes which are closely aligned to district and state curriculum standards.

Language arts, math, science/technology, social studies, arts, and personal/social/physical education will be studied through transdisciplinary units of inquiry. These themes are:

Who We Are ~ How the World Works ~ Where We Are in Place and Time ~ How We Organize Ourselves
How We Express Ourselves ~ Sharing the Planet

The IBPYP focuses on inquiry-based learning. Students are encouraged to ask questions, think critically and make connections from learning to their everyday lives. Students explore all subject areas by asking questions such as:

What is it like?  How does it work?  How is it connected to other things?  What are the points of view?
Why is it like it is?  How do we know?  What is your responsibility?  and How is it changing?

At the completion of 5th grade year, students will participate in the PYP exhibition, a project that culminates their IB experience from kindergarten through grade 5. The exhibition requires students to address a real-world issue or problem, and work collaboratively to help identify and offer solutions that address the issue.  Students will choose a topic, create questions and inquire about it, research, report and take action on the topic.  Students will share this process with the community at the end of the school year.
