Robbinsdale Area Schools excels at MSHSL State Debate Tournament

Cooper High School senior Michael White and junior David Necas finished the 2017 MSHSL State Tournament by taking home some serious hardware. After six primary rounds of debate, Michael and David finished in the top eight to advance to elimination rounds. Michael and David met in the quarter-final round of debate where Michael advanced on coaches decision. Michael eventually lost to the would be state champion to finish as a semifinalist at the state tournament.
During the awards ceremony, David and Michael were also awarded All-State Debate honors. Each year, eight students are awarded All-State honors for their excellence throughout the entire debate season. This is the second year in a row that David and Michael were awarded All-State Debate honors, and became the first students to earn back-to-back All State medals. Robbinsdale Cooper High School was also awarded the MDTA Challenge Cup, which is given to the top debate school in the state. This is the first time Robbinsdale has ever received this honor.
Armstrong High School sophomore Maggie Wuollet finished preliminary rounds in 9th place, missing out on elimination rounds by one place. Juniors Helen Radovic and Hailey Imbach finished in 13th place in Public Forum debate.
The Armstrong and Cooper debate team next compete at the 2017 National Qualifying Tournament Jan. 20-21 at Lakeville North High School. The Robbinsdale Debate team is coached by DJ Brynteson, Chyenne Thibodo, Andrew Urevig, Rob Cegla and Celisia Stanton.
